Annual Chimney Maintenance Twin Cities

A Long Heating Season Means Creosote Adds Up Fast

Winters around Minneapolis and Saint Paul are long and cold, and most fireplaces in the area get heavy use from October through March. That kind of workload means creosote — a tar-like residue that builds up inside the flue from burning wood — can accumulate faster than most homeowners expect. Left unchecked, thick creosote is the leading cause of chimney fires, which is why annual chimney maintenance is recommended by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 211).

Our process covers the full picture. Using a ChimScan camera system, we video-scan the interior flue liner and look for gaps, cracks, and missing mortar. We then power- rotary sweep the flue, scrub the smoke chamber, damper, and firebox, and vacuum out all creosote and ash with a HEPA-filtered system. You’ll see exactly what we see on the camera so there are no guesses and no surprises.

Chimney Inspection and Cleaning Twin Cities

Older Homes Need a Closer Look

Most Twin Cities homes built before 1980 have older masonry chimneys, and a lot of them haven’t been looked at in years. The clay tile liners in those older systems can develop cracks from temperature cycles — years of freezing winters and thawing springs take a toll on the masonry. Our inspection goes beyond just looking down the flue. We check structural integrity from top to bottom, inside and out, using our ChimScan camera to document what we find. If something does need attention, you’ll know right away. We walk through the camera footage with you on-site and explain what each issue means in plain language. No jargon, no pressure — just a clear picture of your chimney’s condition and the options available to you.

Chimney Inspection and Cleaning Twin Cities

Cleaning Is Only Half the Job

A chimney sweep is part cleaning, part inspection — and both parts matter. Cleaning removes creosote so there’s less fire risk. But the inspection side of chimney maintenance is what catches problems like deteriorating mortar, cracked liner sections, or a damaged chimney cap before they turn into costly repairs or water intrusion. The Twin Cities area gets significant freeze-thaw cycles every year, which is hard on masonry. Water that gets into small cracks during a wet fall can expand and cause real damage over the winter. Staying on top of annual upkeep is one of the most straightforward ways to protect a home in this climate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I schedule chimney maintenance for my fireplace?
The National Fire Protection Association recommends that chimneys used for wood burning be inspected and cleaned at least once a year. If your fireplace sees heavy use during our long Minnesota winters, once a year is the minimum. Scheduling in late summer or early fall means you’re ready before the heating season starts.
Creosote is a dark, tar-like material that forms when wood smoke cools as it rises through the flue. It coats the inside of the chimney liner and builds up over time. Heavy deposits are a fire hazard because they can ignite at high temperatures. Regular chimney maintenance removes these deposits and keeps your system safe.
We use a power-rotary brush system to sweep the flue, then scrub the smoke chamber, damper, grate, and firebox brick. We use a ChimScan camera to video-scan the interior liner from top to bottom and vacuum all debris with a HEPA-filtered system. We document everything and share the camera footage with you before we leave.
Older masonry chimneys, which are common throughout the Twin Cities area, use clay tile liners that can crack over time from repeated temperature changes. An annual inspection is especially important for these systems because small cracks can allow heat and gases to escape into the surrounding structure. Catching issues early is far less expensive than waiting until major repairs are needed.
Avoid using your fireplace for 48 hours before the appointment. Move furniture and other items at least 8 to 10 feet away from the fireplace area and keep pets and children out of the work zone during the visit. That’s about it — we handle everything else and clean up completely before we go.
